How Variant Mapping Works

"Teach DSers exactly which supplier SKU matches each variant in your store — so every order is fulfilled correctly."

Note: In dropshipping, a single product listing in your store (e.g., "Wireless Headphones") usually represents multiple physical items — Black/White, EU Plug/US Plug, Small/Medium/Large.

DSers Mapping creates a direct link between what your customer selects and what your supplier calls that item. This guide walks you through what mapping is, how it works in DSers, and clears up a few common questions.

What Is Product Mapping?

Product Mapping tells DSers: "When a customer clicks this option in my store, go buy that specific SKU from the supplier."

Without mapping, DSers wouldn't know which supplier option matches your store's "Black / Large." With mapping, the system knows exactly what to place in the supplier's cart.

DSers provides two main approaches to mapping your products, depending on how your store and supplier structure their product options.

Type 1: Option-Level Mapping (Basic mapping)

This is the primary mapping method DSers uses. Instead of mapping every single SKU one by one, you map at the option level — telling DSers: "Whenever you see 'Large' in my store, map it to 'L' from the supplier" .

DSers then combines these option mappings automatically to fulfill any variant combination.

Best for: Most products, especially those with multiple option types (Size + Color + Material). It's efficient and requires less manual work.

Type 2: SKU-Based Mapping (Standard mapping)

Map each individual store variant directly to a specific supplier SKU, one by one.

Best for: When the supplier's product has fewer options than your store product . In this case, Option-Level mapping cannot work because the supplier doesn't have matching option values to map to.
For example, your store sells "Black/Large," "Black/Medium,"  (2 variants), but the supplier only lists "Black" and "White" as options without size separation. SKU-based mapping lets you manually assign each store variant to the correct supplier SKU.

Do You Need to Manually Map Every Product?

No. When you push a product from AliExpress to your store using DSers, the system automatically creates the mapping for you. For the vast majority of products, the mapping is ready to go right after import — no manual work required.

When you should check your mapping:

While DSers handles mapping automatically in most cases, there are certain situations where you may need to review or adjust it:

Scenario What to Do
Supplier changed variant names (e.g., "EU Plug" → "European Standard") Check mapping and re-map the affected option or variant
Supplier discontinued a variant (a specific color or size no longer available) Check mapping and map that store variant to a different supplier SKU, or remove it from your store
Supplier raised prices significantly Check if you decide to switch to a different supplier
Supplier product is out of stock long-term Check if you decide to switch to a different supplier

When you need to change suppliers, go to My Products → Mapping, you can use DSers' Supplier Optimizer to find a new supplier, and the Automated Mapping feature can help reduce manual work after importing the new supplier — click here to learn more.

⚠️ Important: What Mapping Does NOT Do

A common question: "If I change the supplier URL in mapping, will my store's product page update automatically with the new supplier's images and prices?"

Answer: No. Mapping tells DSers where to send the order after the customer buys. It does not edit your live storefront.

Example: If you map a product to a new supplier, the next order will go to that new supplier. But your store will still show the old product description and images unless you manually edit them in the Store Dashboard → Edit Product page.

💡 Pro Tip: Use the filter on the My Products page to view products with notifications — such as price changes, inventory updates, or SKU changes from your supplier. A quick review keeps your automation running smoothly.
